Transform Win XP to Win Vista without any Customization pack

Since we all know that Windows Vista has been released but its too costly to purchase. The most interesting thing in Vista is its look, new icons, cursors, theme, sounds, login screen, boot screen, etc. So I’m posting this tutorial to make our existing Windows XP to look-a-like Windows Vista.

Yes! There are lots of Vista Transformation packs available on net but I never use them because they slow down the windows and also install a few 3rd party utilities. So its better to do all the things manually.

In this tutorial, I’ll tell you about how to make following things to look-a-like Vista:

Visual style (or theme)
Boot screen
Login screen
Sounds
Mouse Cursors
Windows Icons
Windows Explorer
Progress dialog box
Shutdown/log off dialog box
About Windows box
System Properties dialog box
Windows Classic Startmenu Left-side Image and Start button Logo

1. Vista Theme:

First thing which you should change in your windows is theme. There are lots of Vista themes available on net. I have also created a Vista theme for XP called “VistaVG Ultimate“.

7. Vista Explorer:

Vista Explorer is very much different from XP Explorer. It contains Back & Forward buttons along with the Address bar & Searchbar and under it there is another toolbar containing useful links, like Tile icons, details, etc. But there is a 3rd party utility available called “Styler“, which can add the same toolbars in XP explorer too. Just download Styler from here and then download following Styler Skin:

Now extract it and copy this skin to “%ProgramFiles%\Styler\TB\skins\Styler’s” directory and then apply it from the styler.
Another thing in Vista is the Common Tasks are displayed at bottom of the explorer instead of the default left-side in XP. But if you’ll use my “VistaVG” theme, then you’ll get the Common Tasks at bottom automatically.

8. Progress Dialog Box:

Vista progress dialog box is different from XP. But we can make our XP dialog box to look-a-like Vista one by using my favorite Resource Hacker.

Just open “%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll” file in Resource Hacker and then goto:

Dialog -> 1020 -> 1033

Now replace the existing code in right-side pane with the code in following file:

You’ll also have to replace existing AVIs in the file with new Vista ones. Just download the Vista AVI from here and after extracting the AVI from it, replace following AVIs in the Shell32.dll file with this one:

9. Shutdown/log off dialog box:

Windows Vista doesnt have any shutdown/logoff dialog box just like XP have but XP default dialog box doesnt look good. So here I’ll tell you how to change it in XP?

3.) Now we hv to replace existing 1.BMP file with the downloaded one. To do this:

a.) Goto Bitmap -> 1 -> 1033.
b.) Click on Action -> Replace Bitmap ….
c.) Click on Open file with new bitmap… button.
d.) Select the new downloaded 1.BMP file and click on Open button.
e.) finally click on Replace button.

4.) Now we hv to add remaining downloaded BMPs in the file. To do this:

a.) Click on Action -> Add a new Resource ….
b.) Click on Open file with a new resource… button.
c.) select 4.BMP and click on Open button.
d.) Give 4 in Resource Name and 1033 in Resource Language text boxes.
e.) Finally click on Add Resource button.

5.) Repeat 4th Step for other BMPs (5.BMP & 6.BMP) also. (Resource Name for 5.BMP & 6.BMP will be 5 & 6 respectively and Resource Language will be 1033 for both).

6.) Now download following text file, open it and copy the whole contents then goto Dialog -> 101 -> 1033 and replace existing code with the copied code:

8.) Now to change the text “Microsoft Windows XP” & “Version 2002” (or something like that):

How to enable VIEW Menu on Desktop in Windows XP

I always wondered why “VIEW” menu is not displayed on desktop, its displayed in each folder but not on desktop. I wanted to enable it on desktop so that I can set the desktop icons view, like Thumbnails, Small Icons, List, etc. Thats why yesterday I was playing with Shell32.dll file in Resource Hacker and found a way to enable it on desktop too after 2 hours r&d.

So here we go:

1. Open %windir%\System32\Shell32.dll file in Resource Hacker.

2. Goto: Menu -> 215 -> 1033.

3. In right-side pane, replace the line saying:

POPUP “&View”, 28674, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED, 0

to:

POPUP “&View”, 0, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED, 0

i.e., you have to only change the ID 28674 to 0. It can also be done by deleting the text after “&View” and after compilation RH will automatically add the remaining part.

4. Now click on Compile Script button and save the file.

Now after restarting the PC, you’ll see the VIEW menu on desktop and it’ll work without any problem.

Note: After applying this tweak the “View” button on Toolbar will stop working.

Change Look-n-Feel of Windows XP Start Menu

In this tutorial, I’ll tell u about a few things, which can be used to change the look-n-feel of XP start menu.
After following my tut, u’ll get ur Start menu look as shown in following screenshot:

1.) To change the Default entry names in Start menu’s right side pane, like Control Panel, Connect To, Help & Support, Run, Search, etc, u’ll need to edit %windir%\Explorer.exe file in Resource Hacker and then edit String Table section. I’m giving a few locations, where u can find interesting strings:

2.) Other strings, like My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, My Computer, etc. can be changed in String Table section of %windir%\System32\Shell32.dll file. Just search for them in the file. Most of them will be present in:

String Table -> 1900 -> 1033
String Table -> 1906 -> 1033

3.) Sometimes u’ll not notice the changes in Start menu bcoz windows registry maintains a cache for these entries. So u’ll hv to clear the cache to make the changes visible. Just open regedit and goto:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ ShellNoRoam\MUICache

and in right-side pane, delete all existing values except Default & LangID.

4.) If u want to add ur own entry, like an application shortcut or a folder, then u can follow my following tutorial:

5.) And this one is my favorite trick. I use this trick to remove “All Programs” menu from Start menu bcoz it doesnt look decent and manytimes it gets automatically selected while selecting other entries in Start menu. So I change “Favorites” path to “Programs” folder, so that we can access our program shortcuts. So just follow these steps:

a.) First disable “All Programs” option from Start menu. Open regedit and goto:

and in right-side pane, create a DWORD value NoStartMenuMorePrograms and set its value to 1

b.) Now change “Favorites” path to “Programs” folder. In regedit, goto:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders

NOTE: Change C: to ur system drive, on which windows is installed.

c.) Now change the text of “Favorites” to “Programs” or “All Programs” by editing %windir%\Explorer.exe file in Resource Hacker. Just goto:

and in right-side pane, change string in 8235 line with ur desired one.

d.) U can also drag-n-drop important program shortcuts into left-side pane of Start menu for easier access. Don’t forget to disable “Internet” & “E-mail” shortcuts and “Recent Items” list from “Start menu & Taskbar Properties“.

6.) To change the color & style of Start menu, u can use my “VistaVG Ultimate” visual style, which will completely change its look.

Select Brushes

In any digital painting program the core of the system is in the brushes. Therefore easy access to the brushes is key. In TwistedBrush there are over 2000 brushes included with more added all the time. With the brush shortcut system your favorite brushes are always ready for you.

ArtSets

ArtSets organize the brushes in TwistedBrush into groups of 60 brushes. There are a variety of types of ArtSets, from standard art tools, specialize collections, patterns brushes, cloners, photo retouching brushes, image brushes, etc.

Editing ArtSets

It is easy to create your own brushes and then store them into your own ArtSets. All the tools used by the creators of TwistedBrush to create brushes and ArtSets are included. You can even create your own collections of brushes easily by entering the ArtSet build mode and selecting brushes from other ArtSets. Then if you like, make these your shortcuts with a press of a button.

Select Colors

Color selections are plentitful with the included color palettes. Additionally you can tweak selected colors, create your own palettes, select colors from your picture, from a reference image, the scratch layer or even the trace source image. Dynamic palettes also aid in color selections, allowing you to pick from the history of colors used or hue ranges from your currently selected color.

Tools

All the tools you expect are available from the tool bar. When you have a tool selected it is activated with the right mouse (stylus) click. This means your drawing brush is always available and you never need to reselect your brush to start painting again. The tools you expect are here, eye dropper, cropping, moving, line, box, ellipse, flood fill, gradiant, masking tools, text, drawing guides, brush rotate, brush cleaner etc.

Layers

TwistedBrush includes an advanced system called Layers. With layers you can split your work into transparent layers that sit on top on each others and allow for incredible editing and adjustment options even at the end stages of your painting. A wide range of layer blending modes exist including many not available in any other painting program.

Paper Textures

Use paper textures while you draw to give the feel and look of textured paper and canvas. Over 70 different surface textures are included.

Masks

Masks are the artists masks you may be familiar with if you've done traditional artwork. TwistedBrush has an extensive set of masking capabilities that you'll use to protect and manipulate areas of your work. Included is a magic wand with a number of different modes for creating your masks. Or use a common shape or one of the many masking brushes to create exactly the mask you need.

Filters

A filter allows for processing the image all at once. TwistedBrush includes the full range of image processing filters ready to use.

Tracing Paper

The tracing paper feature gives you the ability to turn your canvas into tracing paper so that you can see a reference image below it for use as a drawing guide. This is invaluable for many types of work.

Cloning

Cloning, taking image data from somewhere else and placing it into your painting, that is cloning. The source image for the TwistedBrush cloning brushes can be a different image or from another area of your current picture. The cloners can be used to render a photo as a artist drawing, or to touch-up a photo or do many things in-between.

Scripts

With scripts you can record your painting actions and play them back, recreating your painting from scratch. This has value for trying out different "what-if" scenarios, for teaching pusposes, for animation production when used with the AVI saving option or just for entertainment.

Pattern Brushes

There are a number of ArtSets that contain Pattern brushes. These brushes paint a pattern on your canvas as you paint. Adjust the size the pattern with the density slider. Categories of patterns include, surface, materials, nature and others.

Most any brush in TwistedBrush can be further enhanced with a shape.

Drawing Guides

Drawing guides are a visual aid that appears over your canvas to help you with perspective, distances, and general construction of your artwork. A large number of different drawing guides are included.

Graphical Rendering Engine Images (GRE Images)
Site Studio has a graphical rendering engine which assembles images on the fly. These are called GRE Images. GRE Images are built dynamically using blueprints called GRE Styles. For example, it contains information on what background color to use, how text should be applied and formatted, whether symbols should be blended onto the image etcetera. This powerful feature makes it possible to create graphical menus and labels.

Fields
Fields are placeholders for data contained in the website project. In Site Studio there are two types of fields; project fields and documents fields. For instance; the Document Title is a document field. By inserting the Document Title field instead of typing a fixed title in a layout, the field will be replaced with the title for each individual document.

Resource Management
All external files, including images, are stored as project resources. When images are imported they will be copied into the project resources folder. Resources are organized using resource folders which is very useful, especially as the amount of resources used in the project grow in number.

Styles
A style is a description on how a paragraph should be formatted. The built-in styles are Heading 1 to 6 and Normal.
Using styles makes it easy to maintain a consistent design throughout the website.
Import Images
Site Studio offers functionality to optimize images for the web. Usually when importing images from a digital camera they are too large to be placed on a web page. Site Studio can automatically resize images, which makes it easy to import images in batches and to create image galleries.

Object tracking – if you don’t have much parallax in a shot it can be difficult to get a good camera solve. boujou 4 enables you to import 3D objects. By importing 3D objects camera solves can then be created based on the correspondence between feature tracks and faces of a polygon mesh.

Survey points – Import survey information in the form of a 3D mesh to improve the accuracy of a 3D solve.

Eyeballing – Very occasionally boujou can’t get the camera position correct. boujou 4 enables you to import a 3D object to eyeball the approximate camera positions in certain frames. boujou can then work out the camera position in the whole shot.
